Squeeze Film Damper Modeling: A Comprehensive Approach

Squeeze film dampers (SFDs) are components used in many industrial applications, ranging from turbochargers to jet engines. SFDs applied when the vibration levels or some instability threatens safe operation of machine. However, modeling these is difficult and somewhat counterintuitive due multiple complex phenomena involved. After a thorough investigation state art, most relevant for characterization highlighted. Among them, oil cavitation, air ingestion, inertia investigated modeled. The paper then introduces numerical model based on Reynolds equation, discretized with finite difference method. Different boundary conditions feeding discharging implemented investigated. validated by means experimental results available literature, whereas different designs configurations sealing system considered.
